An Examination of Parents' Views in Families with and Without Sibling Jealousy

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to examine the views of parents with children who show and do not show signs of sibling jealousy. Another objective of the research is to compare the attitudes and behaviors of these two groups of parents. The study is qualitative, and a case study design was used. The study group consists of the parents (11 mothers and 7 fathers) of children attending preschool who have at least one sibling. In the research, a personal information form and a semi-structured interview form were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using content analysis. According to the findings of the study, the attitudes and behaviors of parents of children showing sibling jealousy differ from those of parents of children not showing sibling jealousy. Parental attitudes and behaviors are influential on sibling jealousy. Parental behaviors such as inequality in time allocation, shifting attention to the younger child, and the younger child sleeping with the mother were found to increase sibling jealousy, while behaviors such as treating children equally, not making comparisons between children, and trying to meet needs equally were found to reduce sibling jealousy. The study also provides recommendations on what parents can do regarding sibling jealousy.
